Six steps, one broken cycle

Most animal welfare work in Bangalore treats dogs who are already on the street. This is the one intervention that stops a new litter from ending up there in the first place.

1

Spot a pregnant community dog

Someone in the neighbourhood — a feeder, a resident, a security guard, anyone who already keeps half an eye on the local dogs — notices a visibly pregnant community dog and tells us before she gives birth.

2

Safe pickup, no street birth

We bring her into a dedicated space so the birth doesn't happen exposed, unattended, or at risk from traffic, heat, or other animals.

3

Birth and 6–8 weeks of nursing

The litter is born and raised in a clean, disease-free environment. Puppies nurse from their mother for the full 6–8 weeks they need before weaning.

4

Mother is sterilized after weaning

Only once the litter is weaned is the mother neutered. Sterilizing before birth would mean terminating an existing pregnancy — we wait, deliberately, so that never happens.

5

Mother returns to her home territory

No relocation. She goes back to the exact spot she came from — sterilized, so she won't have another litter, and no longer competing with a growing pack for food and space.

6

Puppies go to adoptive homes

Raised off the street from birth, they're healthier, better socialized, and easier to place than street-born litters. They never spend a single day as strays.

How this differs from a typical sterilization drive

A typical ABC drive

Catches dogs — pregnant or not — and sterilizes them immediately, which for a dog already carrying a litter usually means the pregnancy ends there. The dog is released the same day or soon after.

Our approach

Catches a dog specifically because she's pregnant, lets her carry to term and wean her litter in a safe space, then sterilizes her — turning one pregnancy into zero future ones, and a litter of strays into a litter of adopted pets.
